Wildfire Update

The evacuation order remains in full effect. The Wildfire SWF 063 did not advance significantly overnight. Alberta Wildfire has communicated that minimal fire behaviour is expected for todays burning period. The South end of fire SWF 063 received about 8 – 9 mm of rain and the town around 3-4 mm overnight.  Alberta Wildfire has forecasted an additional 20 – 30 mm of precipitation over the next 24 hours.   Cooler temperatures are forecasted, and Alberta Wildfire has communicated that these along with the humid conditions will see a downtrend in fire behaviour this week.

Wildfire SWF 063 is estimated to have burned 92,742 hectares.  On the south end of the fire, heavy equipment continues to work on building fireguards and hand crews are working on putting out hot areas along the fireguard. Teams within the town boundaries continued with structure protection mitigation, such as setting up temporary water supplies around the community. Some will remain for the remainder of the fire season.

There has been no entry or fire behaviour within the community.  All utilities such as power, gas, water and sewer remain operational and there has not been any outages.  We continue to confer with Alberta Wildfire on the risk to the community and when people may be allowed back.

We urge any evacuees who have not registered to register at the Reception Centre in Barrhead or by phone at 1-825-977-4382 or 1-825-977-1462.  We want to continue to remind evacuees that Barrhead is the registered reception centre for the town.  We want to send out a big thank you to our municipal partners in Barrhead who have been amazing. The resources and dedication it takes to set up a reception center in such a short time like they did is truly amazing.

Thanks to all residents for your understanding and compassion towards each other during this challenging time.
